New KatonahGreen Video: In the Kitchen with Heather and Karla

In the Kitchen with Heather and Karla is a new video series produced by The plan is to make short videos on healthy food choices, meal preparation and where one can purchase healthy foods in and around Katonah. Heather and Karla came up with this idea while they were discussing how they could work together to do something meaningful. This video series is the first of their joint projects. They both feel that there is a lot of information out there on ‘healthy’ eating and that it gets confusing for a lot of people. Their goal is to help you sift through the information, make it easy by showing you how they prepare foods, make it fun by involving you, and make it local by giving you information about local foods and markets.

Karla is an Alexander teacher extraordinaire in Mt. Kisco, NY. I say extraordinaire because she besides teaching The Alexander Technique, Bodywork, Shiatsu, Yoga, Movement and Meditation, she has studied with Dr. John Diamond (of Your Body Doesn’t Lie fame) for over 20 years, and has a simply wonderful way of approaching food and eating for health and pleasure. Check out her website Here.

Heather Flournoy is the founder of and has been practicing and studying healthy living for over 20 years. Heather is an enthusiastic supporter of the more-than-sustainable living movement and plans on dedicating a lot of time to making local change. Stay posted! In this first episode Heather films Karla making a fresh organic alkalizing juice. Thanks to 15 year old Anna for boldy tasting it!

This juice sounded a little strong even for me and I am a fan of raw juices. Watch to video to get my reaction. Karla’s reasons for drinking this sounded good though: she drinks it for an afternoon pick-up and in general for feeling more energized and keeping her body alkalized which means better health by creating an internal environment less susceptible to viruses.

The recipe:

  • 5 pieces romaine lettuce
  • 6 leaves kale
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 1 large carrot
  • 2 tablespoons ginger
  • 2 large cloves garlic
  • handful parsley

Wash and add to juicer. She uses an Omega Juicer, which seems to extract a lot of juice. The alkalizing diet emphasizes adding more fresh vegetables to the diet and less processed foods and grains. Check back soon for more videos and In the Kitchen discussions with Heather and Karla.
